A Tragic Inheritance

"...And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that He had done for Israel."
~Judges 2:10
Some of us may have heard stories of wretched fathers who instead of leaving behind a secure inheritance for their children instead leave them debts, the stain of their crimes and even reduce them to poverty.
However, there is an inheritance far more miserable than any one can imagine: to leave a generation without the knowledge of the LORD.
This verse precipitates the cycle of sin that we find in Israel's history during the time of the judges. It is a bleak picture of a blind and ignorant generation groping about in spiritual darkness because they did not know the LORD nor His works. But remember, the spiritual demise of one generation always traces its decay back to the previous generation. A failure & reluctance to teach young ones about the character of the LORD, the greatness of His works & the holiness of His law conceives a godless generation.
Herein is a stark warning to us who desire someday to form godly relationships and create Christian homes. We must always joyfully, reverentially & wholeheartedly instruct the next generation in the holiness of the LORD, the purity of His words & the excellence of His ways.
A man may leave his children mansions, fields & servants, but if he has not left them with an intimate knowledge of the LORD, he has left them as but beggars.
The LORD is our inheritance & our portion, and He is the greatest gift we may give our children.
Amen.
