"The king (Solomon) also made a great ivory throne and overlaid it with the finest gold."
~1 Kings 10:18
"And I saw the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from His waist it was like gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from His waist I saw the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around Him."
Ezekiel 1:26-27
"And He who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald."
~ Revelation 4:3
I want to invite you my friends to be in awe of the greatness of our God as King. Let us do this by comparing the kings and queens of this earth to our God in a few respects:
1) Dominion: In the most expansive kingdoms, the Roman empire ruled over a large portion of the world which is but a patch of land on this planet; but our God, the King of the universe reigns over not just a few continents, but over every galaxy, every one of the 200 billion trillion stars, and the heaven of heavens above.
2) Length of Reign: the mightiest of rulers lasted no more than a few decades. But the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9) has reigned from eternity past to the everlasting future in a reign that never began and never ends.
3) Power: The most successful dynasties had a rise and an inevitable decline and fall, but the immutable, unchanging God has never grown in power nor ever shrunk in power by a fraction, but has always exercised full dominion over all His creation.
4) Wealth: the richest kings of the earth built for themselves grand palaces, but the Sovereign LORD "dwells in eternity" (Isaiah 57:15) and has "heaven as His throne and the earth as His footstool." (Isaiah 66:1) The kings and queens of this world robe themselves in the finest of silks, but the LORD "robes Himself with light as with a garment" (Psalm 104:2). The riches of rulers depended on precious stones, conquests and taxes but our God needs nothing and is Himself the One who "supplies all our needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
The Psalms plainly and boldly declare that "the LORD reigns" (Psalm 97:1). To my brothers and sisters who are blessed subjects of this King, rejoice to carry out His commands, to fight His battles and to bring Him the tribute of your devotion. And to my friends who have not surrendered to the King Christ Jesus: Would you refuse to serve Him who died for your crimes? You are the traitor, but He was punished for you. Therefore the only reasonable thing for you to do with your life is to let Christ conquer your heart and commission you to His holy service.
