"Mercy and truth are met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed each other."

~ Psalm 85:10

Let us adore how these divine virtues are blissfully married in our Lord Jesus Christ. In truth, He knows how I have despised Him, violated every one of His holy laws, set myself up in arrogance as an enemy of the Most High. Naturally, to break a law demands punishment, since the transgression of a law is to bring harm and destruction upon ourselves and others. This is infinitely more true when the laws of Adonai are broken, since sin is a blatant, arrogant attack on God's very character.

So sin must be punished or God is not just. But "the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23), and like Paul we cry out, "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" (Rom. 7:24)

Ah! In mercy, He offers salvation; But how can God erase the multitude of sins I've ever committed? I must pay for it, but I cannot! So God pays for it. But how? "God made Him who knew no sin, to become sin for us" (2 Cor. 5:21a) And in putting all our sins upon the one man Christ Jesus, God paid for it Himself.

Therefore to any that will receive Him, the righteousness of Christ is imputed to them. They are washed white as snow (Isa. 1:18). And thus, they have peace with the Father.

Blessed be our Lord Jesus Christ who as the hymn writer put it:

Yielded His life an atonement for sin,

And opened the life-gate that all may go in!
